Our History

The Provincial Choir and Orchestra of Jaen was started the summer of 2013 by a group of music lovers from different parts of the province who had, in March of that same year given charity concerts in Linares and La Carolina. In view of the success of these concerts, it was decided to give continuity and stability to the Project by constituting the current association.

There are currently around one hundred people in the group, divided between choir and orchestra. The choir consists of singing teachers, students of music and fans of vocal music. The orchestra is made up of music teachers and music students from the local music schools. Such diversity makes an interesting meeting point for exchanges, learning and the personal development of its members.

Coinciding with the arrival of 2014, the debut of this young musical group took place on the 3rd January at the Carlos III Theater in La Carolina where they gave a New Year’s Concert. The first half of the programme was made up of a wide selection well-known movie soundtracks arranged for choir and orchestra and in the 2nd half the orchestra performed a typical New Year’s selection. The concert was enjoyed by critics and public alike and the event was a great success. The concert-presentation was held on February 21 in the Aula Magna of the University Campus, with a programme of film soundtracks in the first part, and works by Bizet, Grieg among others in the second. On this occasion the concert was yet another remarkable success.

On April 5, 2014, we celebrated, in Úbeda, a tribute concert to the distinguished Spanish composer Antón García Abril, in which we had the honor of having him present. The first part was started by the orchestra with "Kol Nidrei" by Bruch, which included the brilliant solo by the cellist Lidia Teruel, and then choir and orchestra performed various religious compositions by authors such as Mozart, Fauré and Brukner, closing this first half with a piece by García Abril: "Salve Regina", with a masterful interpretation by Marta Illescas as solo soprano. The concert was completed, after the tribute proper to the Aragonese composer, with the sevillanas processional marches that he orchestrated for the documentary film "Semana Santa", by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón. The audience really enjoyed the concert.

The 2014/15 season concludes with the participation of the Choir and a wind and percussion selection of the Orchestra in the II Mancha Real Choir Contest. For the occasion, we play, for the first time, the theme song from the film "1492: Conquest of Paradise" and a selection from the musical "Les Miserables", based on the novel by Victor Hugo, with music by Claude- Muchel Schönberg.

Activity is resumed in September with new auditions to fill vacant places, our AGM and the first concert of the season, at the “Pósito”auditorium in Linares where the choir, accompanied by piano, re-interprets “1492” and “Les Miserables”, and in a second part, we continued with the selection of soundtracks from various films that was so well received in the previous season.

On November 30, we performed at the Infanta Leonor Theater in Jaén, in the XV Autumn Festival of the Capital of the Holy Kingdom. We played Vangelis, with its well-known soundtrack from the film commemorating the deeds of Columbus, and the selection from the musical based on the novel by the same name by Victor Hugo. The second part of the concert was given by the orchestra and an enjoyable programme, with the pleasure of having Luis Rubén Gallardo as violin soloist.

The next challenge for our group is Mozart’s Coronation Mass, which was performed on March 28th 2015 at the Municipal Theater of Alcaudete, with guest conductor Juan José Maldonado, of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (Mexico). This concert took place three weeks after the "I Jaen Young Performers Contest", another important event for the training and promotion of music in our province.

The 2014/15 season closed two important performances by the Orchestra alone. The first took place on May 16th at the Alcalá la Real Theater, where Samuel Pascoe's "Khromaticon: Symphony of Colors" was premiered in Spain, Mr. Pascoe was our guest conductor that day. The second of these performances came a week later, on May 23rd, in which, in the context of the XXVII Music and Dance Festival of Úbeda, an emotional tribute was paid to Manuel Antonio Herrera Moya, composer from this city, in which the orchestra played some of his most celebrated and significant compositions, in addition to the absolute premiere of the concert for cello, with Lidia Teruel as soloist.

In 2016 the choir embarks on a new programme with "Argentinian Women", in which works by the well-known Argentine composer, Ariel Ramírez, are performed. For its part, the orchestra gives a magnificent performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Darymelia theater in Jaén. In autumn the choir and orchestra perform the symphonic poem "Quijofonías" by composer Juan Carlos Navas, in Alcalá la Real, Jaén and in Toro, Zamora as part of the Ages of Man Exhibition. December saw the world premiere of Manuel Herrera’s Requiem in the city of Úbeda which, together with the orchestra’s very successful tour of China over Christmas, put the finishing touch to this profitable year.
